I’m Dr. Michael Crocker DSW, LCSW, MA. For over twenty years I’ve specialized in providing men and women with psychotherapy for issues related to trauma, cross addiction, out-of-control behaviors, sexual inhibition, intimacy anxiety, attachment disorders, and issues related to gender and sexual orientation. I'm also the founder and director of The Sexuality, Attachment, and Trauma Project.
My interest in helping people began with the movie Ordinary People. Watching scenes of the main character working through his painful issues in therapy had a great impact on me. My own early-age trauma experiences led to a degree in psychology and a desire to help other men learn to express their feelings.
Growing up in a family with addiction increased my interest in trauma-based issues. This began as extensive work in child abuse intervention and prevention. I taught professionals how to identify when children were being harmed and neglected. It became clear in my clinical work that trauma and addiction are deeply interconnected.
Trauma can be both covert and overt. It’s not unusual for clients to be unaware they are even coping with trauma. But anyone who has experienced trauma tries in one way or another to telegraph their struggle. Sometimes this manifests as issues with addiction, or issues with depression and anxiety, or even issues with extreme self-sufficiency.
Trauma disconnects us from parts of ourselves. Our journey in therapy is to reintroduce and reconnect you with those areas opening your life up to more satisfying love, work, and play.
